Voices of refugee youth

The impact of post-primary education in emergencies

“Voices of refugee youth: impact of post-primary refugee education” is an ongoing research study conducted in partnership between UNHCR and Jigsaw Consult. The research is funded through the Dubai Cares Evidence for Education in Emergencies (E-Cubed) funding window. The research links to UNHCR's efforts to support post-primary education for refugees and host communities.

The primary objective of the Voices of Refugee Youth research is to contribute to building the evidence base for post-primary education for refugee youth, through a youth-centered methodological approach.

The research will also inform good practice around refugee youth participation in high-level research; contribute to improving monitoring, evaluation, and learning within refugee youth education programming; and grow the body of useful, rigorous research in the refugee youth education sector. The current focus countries for the research are Pakistan and Rwanda.

In each location, teams of 15 refugee youth researchers are employed to carry out research amongst their peers. The youth researchers undertake intensive training on social science research methods, delivered by REUK, Jigsaw Consult, and John Carroll University.

This is a global first – young refugees in the Global South working as core contributors to a research study on post-primary education, and gaining a university-level accredited qualification through the process.
